A canvas, the artist’s ‘map’ of their own worlds, their own thoughts, fears joys, ambitions, dreams…

A canvas can also prove to be irritating as all heck when said artist is suffering from a severe case of artist block.

“AUGH!” Shoving aside the table top easel Elicia Stiles plopped her head face down on it the teenager wanting nothing more than to throw it right out the window. For her art class they had to paint a picture of something that was to them worth everything in the world.

The problem was...Elicia didn’t know how to start or whom to include in the picture for to her, her entire family was worth everything to her. Her twin Elijah, her parents, even her grandfather and grandmothers meant everything to her.  There was only so much room on the canvas and for her that only meant she would have to somehow find either a way to fit six adults, two kids and the new baby into the picture without losing any details. She loved painting and sculpting usually, she could spend hours and hours working on one particular piece..Many times having wound up falling asleep her hair getting coated in paint in the process of late night projects.

“I hate this…” She sighed lifting her head up a little. Should I keep them all..? Or should I cut some out? ..But that would really hurt them if they saw it…

I don’t wanna cut out Daddy or Father… By ‘Father’ she meant her biologcial father Roger whom had allowed Derek to keep custody of his children but they still found a relationship with him. He was an artist as well and she had spent many an afternoon with her parent curled up beside him sketching. It would break both their hearts…

Derek had come into the kitchen where his daughter was and sighed a little. He was about to start dinner but seeing her frustration was never easy. “Elicia?”  He asked placing a hand on her back. “You okay sweetie?”

“No...I dunno who to paint…” She whined lifting her head up. “I don’t wanna cut anyone out...For this project I wanna do our family...But I don’t wanna hurt anyone by leaving them out..”

Derek hummed in thought, the surgeon wasn’t very artistic but he knew a thing or two about space. “Well…What if we turned the canvas this way?” He suggested turning it sideways.

Elicia sat up fully studying it before running her index finger along the canvas moving her hand along as if she was wielding her favorite brush. “...I think this’ll work...Thanks Daddy.” She smiled hugging him.

He smiled ruffling her hair as she let out a giggle. “Anytime baby girl...But maybe work on this after dinner?”

“Can I at least sketch it out first?”

“Sure.” He went back over to the workspace as he started preparing dinner, deciding making small talk when his daughter was trying to draw was probably a bad idea. Given the last time someone had distracted her in the middle of a sketch she had refused to talk to that person for days.

Not to say he didn’t object to her ignoring the boy she had been crushing on at school.

Elicia was quiet eyes trained on the canvas as she sketched out the figures of her family.

Her dad, Derek.

Her father Roger.

Her mother, Angie.

Her brothers Elijah and Ken, who she sketched being held in her mother’s arms. He was just a baby after all.

Her grandmother Lisbeth and her grandfather Kenneth, and her maternal grandmother Victoria.

She nodded to herself and set down her stuff and made way to move it back to her room until dinner was done. “So I’m free to my table again?”

“For now!”

After dinner, the Stiles family went their separate ways for the evening. Ken was asleep in his crib, Angie and Elijah were outside practicing Aikido.

Elicia had gone back to painting, and Derek was trying to get some paper work done while keeping his daughter company. “...Hey Elicia?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t ever stop doing what makes you happy..Okay?”

“Okay…” She smiled leaning over and kissing his cheek. “I won’t. I love you.”

“I love you too.” He kissed her head as she went back to her art. “...Think anyone would notice if I let Eli sign some of these?”

“You both got crap handwriting so I don’t see why not.”

“HEY!”

“Mark of a doctor!” She laughed.

Derek chuckled shaking his head. “Hey comes with the territory.”

Elicia grinned before setting down her brush and sitting back.

The painting was finished, and she had worked hard, texturing, shading, blending the colors to make it as real as she could. From the warm brown of her father’s eyes, to the mismatched eyes that ran in her biological father’s side. She even managed to add in her and Elijah’s favorite pets their Guinea pigs. Everyone she loved was in that painting and she felt proud of herself. Turning the easel a little she showed it to Derek.

He studied it for a moment taking in all the details, it was quite a change from her usual work. “Elicia...Wow...This is beautiful.”

“Really?” She asked grinning.

He pulled her into a hug. “Really...I’m so proud of you.”

“Aw dad…” She hugged him tightly.

“I love you…”

“Love you too.”
